How blogging can help young writers, especially boys, to become passionate about writing – a practical workshop led by Chris Wild (Teacher of Y5) from Constantine Primary School
At the recent Improving Boys’ Writing event organised by TLAT, Chris Wild and Georgia Paine (Constantine Primary School) shared some of the very exciting and innovative ways in which they are encouraging boys to become passionate about writing. One approach in particular - blogging - generated a great deal of discussion amongst those who were present. This came about as a result of Chris describing how he is enabling boys to post blogs as a way of showcasing their writing. He talked about the impact that having their work on display in an interactive public domain has on pupils’ confidence and their desire to continue writing. People from as far away as the USA have been posting comments in response to the boys’ efforts!
We are delighted to announce that Chris will be running a practical workshop designed to help teachers get started with blogging. This event will take place at Mabe Primary School on the afternoon of Thursday 16th March, starting at 4.30 and finishing at 6:30. During the workshop Chris will help delegates set up a class blog, add users, set permissions and learn to moderate comments. We will look at the role of the teacher as the blog administrator, how to create categories and how to add widgets and tools to enhance your class blog, as well as the basics of creating a blog post.
We will use a blog hosting site called Primary Blogger, which is a free resource powered by Wordpress. To create a blog delegates will need an email address and they will also need an individual email address for each of the users they wish to add. By the end of the session, your blog should be good to go!
