The Kernow Teaching School Alliance (KTSA) is delivering the Specialist programme for Primary & Secondary PGCE in partnership with the University of St Mark & St John. We closely adhere to the national ITT entry requirements for their PGCE courses along with the subject specific requirements.  Please find the links below to the information on the university website.

Applicants must have:
• GCSE English and Mathematics Grade C or above (or an equivalent qualification) and Science Grade C or above for Primary. You must have your GCSEs in place prior to applying for School Direct, except in exceptional circumstances.
• The Numeracy and Literacy Skills Test will need to be taken as part of the application process, and ensure you have passed them both before the start of the course. The following link provides more information on the Skills Tests.
• A DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check as a 'Trainee School Teacher' and meet the Secretary of State's requirements for physical and mental 'Fitness to Teach'.
The Department for Education promotes entry in to teaching to attract Graduates with degree classes normally at 2:1 or above, schools are encouraged to select participants on this basis.
Partnerships take the lead in interviewing and selecting candidates, but all School Direct candidates must also meet the standard entry requirements of the University, and be approved by the University.

English
Preferred applicant profile: Essential Applicants with a 2.2 degree or above in English, English Literature, English Language, Cultural Studies, or Linguistics Applicants with a 2.2 degree in combined subjects of which 50% is one of the above. Applicants with a 2.1 degree in Drama, Performance Arts, Creative Writing, Media, Journalism or Film AND a good A level grade (A-C) In English. Desirable Ideally have evidence of some time spent observing or helping out in an English state secondary school (at least one week within the last 2 years)
Reject Applicants with a 3rd or Ordinary degree

General Entry Requirements

If your degree subject doesn’t link closely to your chosen teaching subject, we’d advise you to take a subject knowledge enhancement (SKE) course before starting teacher training. You can only do these in England and in certain subjects. Successful applicants are then invited to interview.

PRIMARY
As a Primary teacher, you can play an essential role in children’s development. You’ll make a lasting, positive impact on children’s well-being and creativity, opening young minds to new concepts through rich and practical learning experiences, expanding their natural curiosity. Giving children the building blocks to provide firm foundations for lifelong learning.

You need to be able to work with a range of people from parents and teachers to professionals from other services and members of the community. You need to be energetic, creative, have a thirst for learning, love the outdoors whatever the weather and be practical in your delivery.

The Qualification will be PGCE General Primary or PGCE Secondary with the relevant subject.

The KTSA has many primary partners allowing you to experience a wide range of educational contexts. Our primaries are in Rural, Coastal and urban settings and include academy chains, multi academy trusts, faith schools, EYS and KS1 only settings and KS2 settings and a through school KS2 – 5. In fact if there is a type of setting or leadership structure that you wish to experience you will find it within our alliance partners.

The programme will allow you to spend time in two main placements both different in their context. There will also be opportunities to visit other primary settings and our secondary, FE & HE and pupil referral partners.

Our current school direct trainees have already found themselves in the classroom, on the beach and receiving training in at least 4 different school settings. They have had the opportunity to attend Ofsted training, Guided reading and writing, First Aid, Child Protection and Assessment for Learning

ENGLISH

We are looking for individuals who are passionate about teaching young people English in our Secondary Schools. Is this you?

Can you inspire a child to take an amazing journey, open their eyes to new cultures and experiences and delight them with the subtle intricacies of the English language and be back in time for break duty? Our teachers can!

If you have a passion for poetry or love of linguistics and have a good degree in English, as well as the ability to pass this on to students then you too can share this journey. Teach English and you too can give the students in our schools this gift.

You may even give the greatest gift of all. The ability to read.

MATHEMATICS

We are looking for individuals who are passionate about teaching Maths. This is what our mathematicians say about the teaching of their subject, is this subject fo you?

Mathematics is a language used to describe the physical world in numbers. Much like an artist or a poet makes use of words or lines to make sense of their perceptions, so too does the mathematician through numbers. For thousands of years, from Archimedes to Newton, mathematicians have carried humanity upwards and onwards upon the shoulders of Mathematics. Using numbers to exercise that innate human desire; to comprehend and quantify. Mathematicians have journeyed throughout history consolidating rational thought and the quantification of reality within numbers. As a maths teacher you can be proud to feature as a tiny fraction within the sum of humanities explorations into comprehension and self-awareness. You have the opportunity to inspire future generations of thinkers and innovators.

CHEMISTRY

Chemistry is the study of the science of matter, of how the basic elements of matter combine and interact with one another. Chemistry teachers are in a unique position as they have ready access to practical’s and demonstrations which can really bring out the wow factor of studying the sciences. However Chemistry teachers are not only there to provide whizzes and bangs but also to develop critical thinking, analytical skills and, crucially encourage, practical skills which are in short demand and highly sought after by employers. If you want to inspire young people with the intricacies of the atomic world, to develop their practical, analytical, mathematical and problem solving skills whilst providing a crucial link between Physics and Biology, then Chemistry teaching is for you.

PHYSICS

Students are surrounded by Physics every day but don’t necessarily realise it, from the electromagnetic spectrum being used in mobile phone technology to microwaves cooking your dinner. If you can emphasise the relevance of physics then we can help to produce a new generation of creative minds, with this passion we can help to shape the physicists of tomorrow. If you want to inspire young people with the vast Physics world of sub atomic particle, to the full scale and size of the Universe, alongside developing their practical, analytical, mathematical and problem solving skills teaching at Tretherras is for you. Our healthy uptake of Physics at A-level and our successful results at GCSE will see that you are involved in nurturing the skills of future Physicists.

BIOLOGY

We are looking for individuals who are passionate about Biology and are excited about passing this knowledge on to the young people in our schools. This is what one of our Biology teacher said about teaching their subject:

I thoroughly enjoy teaching Biology. I love giving the students a new perspective in which they can perceive the world around them, from the smallest of microorganisms they cannot see, to the largest of mammals. Through studying Biology, students understand the purpose of everyday things and it gives the natural world more relevance to them. My most favourite thing to do with students is dissection, hearing squeals of excitement and sometimes disgust is always great fun.
